Hail Gladdening Light, Φώς Ιλαρόν (Phos Hilaron )

Hail Gladdening Light, Φώς Ιλαρόν (Phos Hilaron )
This is an ancient Christian hymn, perhaps the oldest Christian hymn we have, dating from the 3rd or 4th century. We say it when a new liturgical day begins, at Vespers. It is an invitation to praise the One God in three "hypostas" at the moment when the physical light disappears and a new one should be lit: the light of wisdom.

Dance. Twenty some odd years later On his ship The Sea Slater He sailed into a mass of blubber Gazing up to the sky stood a large walrus that was a hundred stories high, it meant no harm The walrus was in a great deal of pain It suffered from a tusk with tooth decay Albert threw his anchor 'round it's tusk with a little bit of pulling it was out by dusk The walrus thanked Albert and sang, as he sailed away Captain Albert Alexander Friend to sea urchin and me But that Captain Albert Alexander He'll go down in the sea At a ripe old age lightning struck from the sky and split Albert's vessel in two One hundred men fled for their lives on rafts across the ocean blue Albert stood at the stern of his ship A giant octopus had him in it's grip A vortex of spiraling death below ripped and sharks and electric eels all made the trip to see Albert sink to the bottom of the sea Just before he went down he called out to his crew It's obvious that my time has come I'll let this ending ensue I've led an exciting nautical life it would seem and there's no better end than a death by the sea His crew sang Captain Albert Alexander He went down in the sea But that Captain Albert Alexander He'll go down in history That Captain Albert Alexander He went down in the sea

Earworms!

No, I'm not talking about those creatures from Star Trek Wrath of Khan!

I'm talking about those crazy songs that get stuck in your head for no apparent reason. Something reminds you of a song, sort of. Maybe you can even hum a few bars, or almost remember a lyric or two.

And it will not get out of your head!

I've had one stuck in my head for months. I couldn't quite think of the artist or the song. I couldn't quite remember what it was about. I just burned time trying to remember what I couldn't remember.

I found it!

Apparently, I have issues…

Old School Games

Yes, I am OLD SCHOOL when it comes to games. I didn't need a fancy graphics card or a high-end computer. My first computer games were COLOSSAL CAVE and ZORK. They are text adventures. All the images form behind my eyes and between my ears. You can play them online here http://www.web-adventures.org/

Then I got my Apple II plus… There were quite a few that I enjoyed, particularly EMPIRE I-WORLD BUILDERS. Hey, they had graphics, sort of. The ideas behind the games wanted to be epic, but these things were usually developed by individuals or small groups. You could go to a computer store and buy a Ziploc baggie with your 5.25" disk, a trifold instruction manual, and a grand adventure.

I still like games that do not require massive graphics cards. I like games that require turns and don't expect me to have fantastic reflexes. I found another one but I am starting to play, in my vast amounts of free time. Take a peek at GALAXY KINGS. I take my turn by sending an email. A few days later, I get my results… By email. It is a leisurely way to play a game. The game I joined has been running a wild. I think I turned in my move for turn #212…

I wonder why I am posting something about this piece of technology…

Tecla is for anyone who can’t easily use an iOS or Android touchscreen device. This includes those with limited upper-body mobility resulting from spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis (MS), ALS, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, brain injuries, or stroke.

Tecla connects to industry-standard switches or the driving controls of a wheelchair, enabling users to:

-send and receive text messages

-browse the web

-read books

-make and receive phone calls

-do just about everything you can do with a smart device -- completely hands-free.

To learn more about Tecla visit: http://gettecla.com

Maybe I'm just dreaming about getting this… Or not.

It is the brainchild of Melbourne entrepreneur and marketing guy Steve Sammartino (twitter @sammartino) and Raul Oaida (twitter @rauloaida), a self-taught teenage technology genius from Romania who Steve met on the internet. Steve crowd funded it via twitter with a single tweet: https://twitter.com/sammartino/statuses/174843327961776128 Super Awesome Micro Project Factoids: - The engine is made from standard Lego pieces and runs on air! - The engine has four orbital engines and a total of 256 pistons. - More than 500,000 LEGO pieces. - Top speed around 20-30km (We drive it slow as are scared of giant lego explosion) - Built in Romania and shipped to a secret location in Melbourne. - It's a Hot Rod design, mainly because hot rods are cool. I Have Been Home from the Hospital since the Sixth. I just have not posted anything.

I am not particularly fond of hospitals, BIG surprise! I am particularly not fond of the nighttime environment. Sleeping is a full-contact sport--complete with blood tests at random times and other pleasantries.

Everybody knows about this. You all know about the frequent intrusions and the background noise.

If you have entertaining ways to cope with these features of hospital life, leave them in a comment. It might be fun to compare notes.

Don't get me wrong, Nexus Hospital in The Woodlands wasn't a bad place fact, for the first three or so weeks, there was no better place for me. I was quite sick! Between the blood clots in the pneumothorax and various other nonsense, it was quite dodgy.

And yes, I developed coping skills for night times in the hospital. Since people keep wandering in at random times, turning on the lights, waking me up; I left the lights on. It's easier to sleep with lights on than to go back to sleep after startling awake because of light pollution.

Background noise and constantly wondering what time it was convinced me to watch The Weather Channel on my long. When I couldn't sleep, it gives me something to look and listen to. At other times, it was "white noise" of the highest quality.

The programs overnight are SOMETHING. In spite of myself, I got addicted to one offering that seem to come up at 2 AM or something. It is perfect 2 AM fare!

Watching other people work is fascinating.
