Review: The Samurai

The Samurai by Shūsaku Endō
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and/but think that what you get out of it is what you bring to it. Granted, I will have to read this one again to test the theory. My tastes and suppositions seem to been strengthened while reading THE SAMURAI.

Things that I particularly noted and appreciated:
-While I used to books that paint Jesus into something that looks good on a Hallmark greeting card, this one reminded me of how truly strange it may seem to worship a dying man on the cross. It's even weirder that this is God-made-flesh, coming with the purpose of bringing those who are offended by Him back into relationship with the Trinitarian God of the Bible.
-Baptism works. Sometimes it works in spite of the person being baptized.

Is it a perfect book? No. Is the theology always great? No. This is a work of historical fiction. It works well on multiple levels. It leaves me wishing for more. Sometimes, it left me cold. Sometimes I was offended. (That's okay. Sometimes it is necessary to be offended to grow.)

Review: Space Cadet

First, the bits that didn't impress me, in no particular order:

Heinlein's attitude towards women.

The science that he couldn't have gotten right because so little was known. (For example, inhabitants and human colonies on Venus.)

As expected in a science fiction book, "iffy" theology.

On the Whole, Though I enjoyed this book now as I did when I was 12. The "geewhiz" factor as Matt Dodson goes to space the first time still resonates. I wanted to be a part of Space Patrol then, and I still wish it was a possibility.

They finish with some verses of "The Gambler" as they reach Castleton Hall. The band was formed in 1999 by Andy Bryan and some of the committee members from the Millport Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS) The first few members came from Millport, Largs, Fairlie and other areas of North Ayrshire. They now have about 60 members, with 18 young players and they wear their own Isle of Cumbrae tartan.

I enjoyed SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT when I took my first English course at (what was then called) North Harris County Community College. It was in a huge peach-colored book that covered English literature through Shakespeare, I think.

I was surprised to learn that I like epic poetry. I still like it.

At that time, we didn't cover PEARL or SIR ORFEO.

This translation and introduction by J.R.R. Tolkien brought all the pleasure back to me. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I can't wait to read it again, but I have too many books on my "TO-READ" list to do that quite yet.

The fact that this is an audiobook makes it even better.

This series reminds me of the science-fiction of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Lots of adventure, lots of things going "boom," lots of doublecross. It's fun. It's satisfying, as long as you're not looking for the subtle meaning of the universe. Come on now, don't take yourself so seriously! Enjoy the read!
