#2 of 6: What Memoirists Need to Know About Beginnings

#2 of 6: What Memoirists Need to Know About Beginnings
Beginnings matter. There's the question of how to get started, and the question of how to start scenes, and how to start chapters. In this short clip Brooke Warner and Linda Joy Myers share what memoirists need to know about Beginnings as they gear up for their upcoming Spring Boot Camp for Memoirists . BEGINNINGS (or FOUNDATIONS) will covered in our upcoming boot camp by Wendy C. Ortiz, author of Excavation. Boot Camp dates: Tuesdays: 3/9, 3/16, 3/23, 3/30, 4/6, 4/13 Early-bird price: $149 Check out the whole Boot Camp line-up: https://ift.tt/3dFzidv Week 1 (March 9): Creating Your Blueprints with Marion Roach Smith Week 2 (March 16): Laying Your Foundation with Wendy C. Ortiz Week 3 (March 23): Building Your Dream House with Porochista Khakpour Week 4 (March 30): Stair-steps and Thresholds—Transitions and Time in Memoir with Brooke Warner Week 5 (April 6): Making It Your Own with Faith Adiele Week 6 (April 13): The View from Your Porch with Linda Joy Myers For 6 weeks starting March 9, you'll be treated to craft classes that will change the way you think about memoir. This boot camp focuses on craft—which is so essential and yet sometimes gets overlooked because so much of memoir is about getting the words onto the page. But once you do—there’s a lot to learn about—like structure, story, transitions, reflection & takeaway, and more. **All sessions will be recorded. *** Each class is 90 minutes on Zoom, always recorded. There's an add-on option for $30 to join weekly Friday writing circles for those who are interested.

#1 of 6: What Memoirists Need to Know About Structure

#1 of 6: What Memoirists Need to Know About Structure
Structure is one of the most important things all memoirists need—eventually. In the beginning, though, it's important not to hold too tight to a specific structure. Over time, of course, there are methods you can implement to support you to find the best structure for your book. Take a listen to Brooke Warner and Linda Joy Myers thoughts on what memoirists need to know about structure. STRUCTURE will covered in our upcoming boot camp by Marion Roach Smith, author of The Memoir Project. Boot Camp dates: Tuesdays: 3/9, 3/16, 3/23, 3/30, 4/6, 4/13 Early-bird price: $149 Check out the whole Boot Camp line-up: https://ift.tt/3dFzidv Week 1 (March 9): Creating Your Blueprints with Marion Roach Smith Week 2 (March 16): Laying Your Foundation with Wendy C. Play by Post at DnDOnlineGames

Play by Post at DnDOnlineGames
In the on-line world of role playing games, one has many choices. One, however, remains closest to the traditional table-top method enjoyed by people for generations. This is play by post. Play-by-post is similar to a table-top game. There are players who play characters and a Game Master who runs the game. Play-by-post can use the mechanics of any rules system, and just as in a table-top game, the GM is free to adjust and customize the rules as they see fit. Where play by post differs is in its pacing and, primarily, text-based game play. Characters' actions are played out over days instead of minutes. There's no formal "gaming session". Players can post their actions at a time that's convenient for them. This allows players from all over the world, with vastly different schedules, to play together easily and seamlessly. It's an ideal method for those who love to game but are unable to set aside large chunks of time in their busy schedules to play. Because one has time to think before posting their actions, players can take time to look up rules, think carefully about what their characters would do, or put extra time into writing a deeper, more literary post. Similar to a well written short story, a player's posts can be as detailed and dynamic as they are able to write. Players and GMs alike are only limited by their creativity and imagination. This method of collaborative creative writing meshes very well within the structured rules and settings one finds in most role playing systems. With multiple creative minds and a central DM to manage them, truly epic characters and stories often result. DnDOnlineGames.com is an ideal place to play-by-post. It is a free website run and supported by volunteers who love role playing. The site provides excellent tools such as: an integrated dice roller; on-line character sheets, supporting several systems; many formatting options, from secret text to attached images and files; and an easy way to connect with other members who wish to play or run a game. These features are enough to set DnDOnlineGames.com apart from similar sites, however its strongest asset is its friendly and diverse community of over 3000 active members. New members can play in a New Player Solo Game designed to be a fun way to learn about play by post and role playing in general. Members who wish to run their own games can get advice from more experienced DMs in our DM mentoring section. The site even has its own free on-line gaming magazine, Explosive Runes. With all these features; a friendly community; and new games starting every day, now is a great time to try play by post. Getting started is easy. We hope to see you in the forums.

A Hobbit A Wardrobe And A Great War Trailer

A Hobbit A Wardrobe And A Great War Trailer
The documentary film series, “A Hobbit, a Wardrobe, and a Great War,” explores how the experience of two world wars shaped the lives and literary imagination of two internationally famous authors and friends, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Based on Joseph Loconte’s New York Times bestseller, the film examines how Tolkien’s combat experience during the First World War—at the Battle of the Somme—launched him on his literary quest. The film reveals how the conflict reinforced Lewis’s youthful atheism—he was injured in combat—but also stirred his spiritual longings. The film traces the careers of both men at Oxford University, and their deepening friendship as they discover a mutual love of medieval, romantic literature. Facing the threat of another world war, Tolkien and Lewis reach back into their earlier experience of war as they compose their epic works of fantasy, The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia.

A Hobbit, a Wardrobe, and a Great War: J.R.R. Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and World War I

A Hobbit, a Wardrobe, and a Great War: J.R.R. Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and World War I
The First World War laid waste to a continent and permanently altered the political and religious landscape of the West. For a generation of men and women, it brought the end of innocence – and the end of faith. Yet for J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, the Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers on the Western Front, survived the trenches, and used the experience of that conflict to ignite their Christian imagination. Had there been no Great War, there would have been no Hobbit, no Lord of the Rings, no Narnia, and perhaps no conversion to Christianity by C. S. Lewis.

Sheet music downloadable here: https://ift.tt/3tGRPvI Text: Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace: Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum Quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum: Lumen ad revelationem gentium, et gloriam plebis tuae Israel. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto: Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in sæcula sæculorum. Amen. Translation (The Book of Common Prayer, 1662): Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
